All staff at Dunster First School aim to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. All staff and volunteers involved with children have a responsibility to be mindful of issues related to their safety and welfare and a duty to report any concerns.

Dunster First School has a clear Safeguarding Policy, Code of Conduct for all staff and volunteers, a Whistle Blowing policy and staff (and volunteers) undertake regular professional training to ensure everyone is fully aware of how to effectively keep children safe.  All staff sign to say they have read and understood Keeping Children Safe in Education Part 1 amongst other key documents and undertake annual update training.

Dunster First School have specially trained interviewers on safer recruitment to ensure that our procedures are robust, with our single central record being regularly monitored by senior staff and trained governors.  References will be requested both by telephone and in writing, so they can be fully verified.   Full safeguarding checks, including enhanced disclosure checks and overseas checks, are conducted as detailed in the KCSIE documents.

If you are concerned that a child or adult may be at risk or that you are struggling looking after your child please phone Somerset Direct, 0300 123 2224, who will be able to talk through your concerns with you. Alternatively, you can report a concern to our safeguarding lead at the school or one of our safeguarding team: Naomi Philp (Designated Safeguarding Lead) Kate McEntee, Helen Hickman and Louise Collins (Safeguarding Team). The Local Authority Designated Officer is Anthony Gobel.
